She is now
on operation.
Irene
Fernandez is co-founder and director of the non-governmental organization
Tenaganita in Malaysia. This organization is committed to the rights of migrant
workers. Irene Fernandez, which is also the human rights group SUARAM
co-founded (Voice of the Malaysian people) and the Asian Forum on Women, Law
and Development, is currently Vice-Chair of the Women wing of the opposition
party Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR)
She’s before
ended her 13-years court battle after Kuala Lumpur High Court’s judge,Mohamad
Apandi Ali reversed the Kuala Lumpur Magistrate’s Court judgment in 2003 where
Fernandez was sentenced to one years’ jail for maliciously publishing false
news. She was allowed bail pending her appeal to the higher court. The High
Court judge made the decision after deputy public prosecutor Shamsul Sulaiman
said that the prosecution had decided not to fight the appeal.
“In the
light of the prosecution not opposing the appeal by the appellant, there is no
necessity to deliberate on the appeal further,” said Mohamad Apandi, drawing
cheers and applause from Fernandez’s family and friends who were gathered at
the court as early as 9am.
“I hereby
reverse the findings and sentence, and acquit and discharge the appellant.
Conviction and sentence is hereby set aside,” said the judge.
Hope the operation went well. Pray for PKR sister Irene: you are an
inspiration to all Malaysian who seek truth and justice.
